Knitting and Crocheting instead of Doom Scrolling

Why keeping our hands busy sometimes quiets our minds better than another hour online.
Knitting has always felt like meditation to me.
It keeps my hands busy. It quiets that restless feeling that I should always be doing something. I’ve never been especially good at sitting still without feeling guilty or unproductive. Even when I’m trying to relax, there’s always a part of my brain telling me I should be cleaning something, answering something, finishing something, or moving on to the next task.
Knitting changes that for me a little.
Making something with my hands gives all of that restless energy somewhere to go. The repetition is calming. The focus is gentle. And somehow, even while sitting still, it still feels like I’m creating something instead of just consuming more noise.
At any point in the day, knitting gives my brain somewhere softer to land than an endless scroll.
I came across this article about how knitting and crochet can help interrupt doom-scrolling, and it really resonated with me:
How Knitting (or Crochet) Helps You Overcome Doom-Scrolling
Maybe this is part of why so many of us reach for yarn without even thinking about it…not just to make something beautiful, but to feel a little more grounded while we do.
